You’ve probably heard the saying, “You could have cut the air with a knife!” If you have ever walked into a room just after someone has had an argument you know what I mean. You may even instinctually want to open a window for some fresh air. What you’re doing is a very simplified elemental space clearing. You’re allowing the fresh air to circulate the room to try to clear away the heavy energy left behind from the argument. But this is more like a band-aid and at the moment will help, but in the long run will have little effect.
Energetically, everything that ever happens in a room or a building goes out in ripples like the dropping of a stone in a pond. It gets stuck in the walls, floor, ceiling, furniture, and other objects in the room and building. It gets imprinted into the very fabric of the structure.
(I relate this to the physical effect of cigarette smoke in the home of a heavy smoker.) Any repetitive actions and behaviors can get deeply imbedded, and events accompanied by strong emotions or trauma are the most strongly imprinted of all.
Everyone creates a certain amount of energetic junk on a daily basis, which leaves a stagnant residue in their home in much the same way everyday living creates a need for cleaning and straightening up on a physical level. If you’ve ever been in a centuries old home and felt a heaviness that you can’t quite put your finger on, that’s from a build-up of energy that actually stands out from the walls. There are also 10-year-old buildings that feel nearly as dense, simply due to the amount of mental and emotional traffic in the place in that time.
So, you might ask yourself…do I need a space clearing? The answer is most likely, yes. Just about everyone does. There are very few buildings in the world that are so well designed that they don’t need regular space clearing. Some people even choose to make space clearing a part of their regular building maintenance so that their space is energetically as well as physically clean and clear.

Realtors Use Space Clearing to Help Sales
by Denise Linn
Space clearing works…even if folks don’t know it’s been done. In the New York Times it was reported that the largest realtor in Manhattan (the Corcoran Group) hires space clearers to cleanse and bless buildings that aren’t selling. This large realty company found that even if a building had been on the market for a long time, after a clearing, it would often sell. Even though the prospective buyers didn’t know about the clearing, they would “feel” the sparkling energy in the space and would make an offer.
Yes, you don’t have to believe space clearing works to make it work. So cool!
Okay, so space clearing is a good thing to do. But, when is the best time to have a space clearing?
Here are some guidelines: It’s best to do a full space clearing ceremony at least once a year, or sooner if you have a major life change such as starting or ending a relationship, moving, career/job, a new baby, etc. If you have a very busy life or are going through a difficult time, then a maintenance space clearing every 3-6 months could be a good plan of action.
If you decide to have a space clearing in your home, here’s what you can do first…clear the clutter! Keeping your home as clutter-free and clean as possible goes a long way when it comes to space clearing.
The de-clutter rule is: if you don’t use it or love it….lose it.
If you’ve read any of my other blogs in the Feng Shui & Home Wellness category, you know my thoughts about clutter…its gotta go! Remember, it can be difficult to be open to new opportunities if you keep hanging on to the old stuff. De-cluttering is an ongoing task just like cleaning the bathroom or emptying the dishwasher. De-cluttering before a space clearing is not required, but is recommended. So whether or not you de-clutter your home or have an Elemental Space Clearing ceremony, releasing the stagnant energy can give you that “sparkling” feeling inside to help lift you up to new heights. I’d say that’s a good thing. 😉
